“Jay"

Jay Hertzog recently retired after 10 years as the Dean of the College of Education at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. For nine of those years, he served as the chair of the Pennsylvania Deans of Education Forum representing all 95 teacher preparation institutions in the Commonwealth. In this capacity he worked closely with the Pennsylvania State Board of Education, the Secretary of Education, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Education Committee and several key legislators in crafting legislation designed to raise standards for future teachers. Jay serves as a doctoral advisor for Nova Southeastern University and in Fall 2009 was elected President-elect of the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (PAC-TE).

Jay received the “Excellence in Education Award” for Distinguished Contributions in the Field of Education from the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) College of Education’s Alumni Society (2006) and received an appointment from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, Bureau of Mediation as a mediator/arbitrator for the Commonwealth in school-related cases. In 2007 he received the “Teacher Educator of the Year Award” from PAC-TE.

Jay’s degrees are from PSU with majors in Music Education (BS) and Educational Leadership (M. Ed. and D. Ed.) with post-doctoral work at the University of Wyoming studying Middle Level design with Dr. Alfred Arth. Dr. Hertzog and his research partner, Dr. P. Lená Morgan, are nationally recognized as leaders on the effects of student transition from middle school to high school. Over the past fourteen years they have presented at national, regional and state conferences, published over 30 articles and have consulted with schools across the country on this topic. Furthermore, he is the co-author of two textbooks on Educational Leadership and one textbook on teacher preparation.

Prior to his arrival at Slippery Rock University, Jay was Professor and Chair of the Department of Clinical and Professional Studies at Augusta State University and Professor of Educational Leadership at Valdosta State University. At these institutions, he was active in establishing doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership and taught courses at the Masters and Doctoral level.

Before entering higher education in 1987, Jay was an elementary vocal music teacher, the director of a competitive high school marching band, an assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent in the public schools of southeastern Pennsylvania.

(Nov. 29, 2012) — Christopher Samuel Sharp, former head of the education department at North Georgia College & State University, died Nov. 16 at his home in Venice, Fla., after a brief illness.

North Georgia to host exhibit from U.S. Holocaust Museum

(Nov. 26, 2012) — North Georgia College & State University is hosting the traveling exhibition "Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings" produced by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The exhibition, which runs from Jan. 17 to March 15 at the university's Library Technology Center, and accompanying lecture series are free and open to the public.

North Georgia's School of Education earns national accreditation

(Nov. 12, 2012) — The School of Education at North Georgia College & State University has earned full accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for its undergraduate- and graduate-level teacher training programs.
