Uploading a document to the web in its original format immediately limits users who do not have the appropriate software to open it. So unless you are sure your users can open it and/or it needs to be modifiable, convert all documents to HTML or PDF prior to uploading.

1. For informational purposes only. To be read and/or printed by anyone. PDF, or HTML Advantage: Can be viewed from a browser. Anyone can download Acrobat Reader for free. Keeps the information in its original format.
2. To be filled out and printed by anyone. Fillable PDF or Word, Excel doc Disadvantage: Word and Excel allow the user to modify the document. Also user must have MS Word or MS Excel on their computer. This is not free software.
3. To be downloaded and modified by a select group of users. Original format Advantage:  Gives your users all the same format to work with.
Disadvantage: Users must have the software to open the file.
