The English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program at the University of North Georgia is offered as a graduate level or Professional Learning Units (PLU) option.

Deadline for Fall 2013 admission: August 1, 2013The University of North Georgia College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the ESOL endorsement is approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
The ESOL graduate level endorsement meets the following state of Georgia certification standards for ESOL:
1. language as a system
2. culture
3. planning and implementing
4. assessment
5. professionalism
Quick Facts
- Available to current or future classroom teachers with Georgia teaching certification seeking ESOL endorsement.
- ESOL Endorsement begins Summer or Fall terms.
- Courses are offered online and face-2-face courses over 2 consecutive terms. (Students may repeat courses if needed).
- Two courses are taken each term.
- Students in the program must purchase LiveText online or from the UNG bookstore (one time purchase) to be able to complete the required assignments and assessments in the program.
- Some courses require practicum hours or classroom assessment of English Language Learners; applicants who are current classroom teachers or substitute teachers may consider on the job hours as fulfilling these requirements. Applicants who are not in the classroom are responsible for securing permission from a local school to complete course practicum hours or assessments or can contact the Center for Language Education to work with students in the Intensive English Program.
- Courses may be applied towards PLU credit.
- Courses may be applied for graduate credit. Graduate students may take the courses as non-degree students. Graduate credit may later be applied toward a Master of Education Degree. Contact Graduate Studies or visit the program website for additional information.

Applicants pay a $40 one-time, non-refundable application fee.
Step Two: ESOL Endorsement Application
No Summer 2013 Admission at this time.Fall 2013 Admission - To begin courses in Fall 2013, complete online application by August 1, 2013.
Financial Aid & Payment Information
Financial aid is not available for endorsement programs.
Tuition for graduate credit can be paid online to the UNG Business Office.
Payment for PLU credit --- Payment ($550 per course) must be made in full by deadline. Please make check payable to: Pioneer RESA, and write 'ESOL Endorsement UNG' on the MEMO line. Mail check to: Attn: Dana Turner, College of Education, University of North Georgia, 82 College Cir, Dahlonega, GA 30597.
All ESOL Endorsement courses require a subscription to LveText. If you do not already have a subscription, you may purchase a subscription online at LiveText or at the UNG bookstore (one-time purchase, mandatory for all courses).

ESOL Endorsement Orientation Session
Applicants will attend a brief orientation session to receive training on how to use LiveText, Casenex, and Desire2Learn course management system and to receive other pertinent information about the ESOL Endorsement. Upon acceptance into the Summer or Fall cohort, you will receive an email with information about the date and location of the orientation.
TSLE 6001: Cultural Issues in ESOL
The focus of this course is the role of culture in the teaching and learning of linguistically diverse students. Prospective ESOL teachers will examine major concepts, principles, theories, and research on culturally responsive learning environments and strategies for English language learners.
Candidates will complete all assignments, discussions, and activities online in the Desire2Learn course management system while utilizing Casenex, and LiveText.
TSLE 6002: Applied Linguistics in ESOL
Through this course, participants will become knowledgeable about the nature and structure of language and how first and second languages develop. Participants will explore language teaching strategies consistent with the current understanding of the nature, structure and development of language. By developing a repertoire of effective strategies, participants will become more proficient at supporting students’ second language development. Teachers will investigate best practices and current research and consider how to adapt and integrate these principles into their own educational practice.
Candidates will attend face-2-face lectures and will complete additional readings, discussions, and activities online in the Desire2Learn course management system while utilizing Casenex and LiveText.
TSLE 6003: Materials and Methods in ESOL
This course will focus on developing instructional strategies for supporting ESOL students in content area learning. Course participants will develop instructional and leadership skills needed for teaching ESOL. Participants will reflect upon using proven instructional practices to enhance learning in today’s challenging classroom environment. Using the cases as a launching point, teachers will be given the opportunity to participate in discussions regarding beliefs, best practices, challenges, current research, and ways to apply them to their own teaching practice.
This course emphasizes the knowledge, understanding, and use of standards-based practices, assessments, and strategies related to planning, implementing, and managing ESL and content instruction, including classroom organization, teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills, and choosing and adapting classroom and multimedia resources.
Candidates will attend face-2-face lectures and will complete additional readings, discussions, and activities online in the Desire2Learn course management system while utilizing Casenex and LiveText. In addition, successful completion of this course requires practicum hours in an ESL setting in a classroom. If candidates are not currently classroom teachers, he or she must arrange for permission to observe a classroom with ELL students.
TSLE 6004: Assessment in ESOL
The purpose of this course is to enable teachers who are pursuing ESOL endorsement to acquire and use knowledge to select, develop and implement culturally responsive assessment practices suitable for use with students who are classifies as limited English proficiency.
Teachers will demonstrate proficiency in ESOL Performance Standards as they relate to the course.
Candidates will complete readings, discussions, assignments and activities online in the Desire2Learn course management system while utilizing Casenex and LiveText. In addition, successful completion of this course requires practicum hours in an ESL setting in a classroom with the ability to conduct assessments. If candidates are not currently classroom teachers, he or she must arrange for permission with a local school in order to assess ELL students.
