Welcome parents!

We are so glad that your student has chosen to study abroad. It is a wonderful and life changing experience that will help them to learn more about other cultures around the world as well as to grow individually. This information is provided to answer questions that you may have regarding the study abroad experience. However, it is important that your student research and understand the program themselves, as the purpose of the program is to aid and promote independence and responsibility of the student.

Benefits of Study Abroad

The Institute for International Education conducted a survey that found nearly 80 percent of Americans believe undergraduates would benefit from a study abroad program. However, only one percent of U.S. students actually participate in study abroad programs each year. Many students claim that studying abroad was a life changing experience that gave them a new perspective on the world. Many also state that studying abroad was the highlight of their college experience. There are many benefits of study abroad programs:

Students:

• Earn class credits towards their North Georgia degree.
• Experience other cultures by being submerged in them as opposed to simply reading about them in a book.
• Learn a foreign language first-hand.
• Broaden their horizons and open their eyes to new possibilities.
• Develop skills that will help them to become successful in the future.

Many graduate schools and companies look for individuals that are well-rounded and that have knowledge of other cultures and languages. Study abroad programs can help students to develop these skills and can help them acquire positions in either a graduate program or in a career.

Tips to Consider 

• Maintain a level of distance. Studying abroad is allowing your student to become more independent and to learn to handle problems and situations on their own.
• Prepare for a transformation. Your student will likely return home with new ideas and perspectives on certain things. It is important to be supportive of the new thoughts and ideas they may develop.

Packing Suggestions:

• Less is always better. Space can be an issue in some circumstances and airlines do charge more for heavier bags.
• Make sure to bring appropriate clothing. Plan for weather differences. Also bear in mind that other cultures dress more conservatively than Americans.
• Bring copies of any important documents.
• Bring any prescription medications that may be necessary.
• Bring a first-aid kit if it may be necessary.
