Advisee/Advisor Relationship

Both the advisee and the advisor have particular responsibilities that help make the advising process effective.

Advisee should

  1. Secure the correct plan of study (advisee is free to ask his/her advisor questions that will help determine which plan of study is best, but the department secretary generally has copies of all plans of study on hand for review, as well).
  2. In pencil, fill out the plan of study as thoroughly as possible before meeting with the advisor.  This can be done by
    1. Consulting both the Core Curriculum section of the advisee’s student bulletin, the sections regarding the student’s chosen major and minor (if applicable), as well as the upper level course rotation schedule posted on the English webpage; and
    2. Printing out one’s degree evaluation (a version of the student transcript, available in Banner), including information about which courses have transferred to NGCSU.  Incoming freshman will have little information to record, of course.
  3. Make a list of questions for the advisor that will enable the advisee to fill in gaps in the plan of study and move ahead in his/her academic program.  One question the advisee should ask the advisor is, “Are there required classes in my major (or minor) that are only offered during certain semesters?”  For example, the student’s capstone class may only be offered each fall, and if the student fails to sign up for it his/her last fall semester, he/she will have to stay an extra semester to complete it.
  4. Before completing 90 hours, take the completed plan of study to have it signed by all the required parties (including the major advisor, minor advisor, and department head) and then turn it in to the registrar’s office.
  5. If the registrar contacts the student about discrepancies in the plan of study later on, the advisee should contact his/her advisor to resolve those discrepancies.  If the advisor cannot solve the problem, the advisee should contact the department head for help.

Advisor should

  1. Meet with the advisee early on to establish an initial relationship.
  2. Answer questions about which plan of study is most appropriate for the student.
  3. Answer questions about filling in the plan of study, once the student has made a thorough attempt to fill it in on his/her own.
  4. Answer questions about courses that need special attention, such as pre-planned internships or courses that are only offered at specific times.
  5. Follow up with the student on issues of career plans or course work.
  6. Contact the department head, the registrar, or other campus entities for information to resolve any discrepancies in the plan of study.
