Master’s Program in Secondary English Education / Master of Art in Teaching English Program
Degree Maps and Plans of Study
The Master's Program in Secondary English Education (M. Ed.) is specifically designed to help teachers of English literature and composition improve their teaching skills and add depth and breadth to their knowledge of the discipline of English. The program consists of twelve courses: four courses in the Education Department, five courses in the Department of English, and three endorsement courses which, depending on the choice of endorsement, can be in either the department of Education or the department of English. All Master’s students in Secondary English Education must take EDUC 6101, EDUC 6102, EDUC 6103, and EDUC 6001(see the Education department’s description of the course progression here); as well as ENGL 6950 and ENGL 7990. The remaining three English courses are electives—chosen by the student with the advice of his or her graduate advisor—carrying an ENGL prefix and taken at the 6000- or 7000-level, and may include literature courses, writing courses, or a mixture of both. The endorsement course choices will be based on the student’s selection of an endorsement (Special Education, English as a Second Language (ESOL), Gifted, or Advanced Content (further ENGL courses; recommended for students interested in pursuing college level teaching or further graduate studies in English). The Masters of Art in Teaching English (MAT) program is for individuals whose undergraduate degree is not in Education and who wish to be certified to teach. The program consists of twelve or thirteen courses: seven courses in the Education department and five or six courses in the English department. The additional ENGL course is for those who wish to be able to teach at the college level. All Masters of Art in Teaching English students must take EDUC 5102, EDUC 5103, EDUC 5104, EDUC 5101, LART 6300, EDUC 6001, and EDUC 5105 (see the Education department’s description of course progression here; as well as ENGL 6950 and ENGL 7990.
